BHASVIC Storyworks 'Everyday Histories' - Past & Present Tour
BHASVIC Main Hall, 205 Dyke Road, BN3 6EG
Sunday 20th September 2026
Following the award winning Community History Festival in March, BHASVIC is delighted to open its doors to the general public once more for its second event of 2026, run by the Storyworks Society.
This guided tour of the original 'main' building and our newest addition, The Elms Building, focuses on the history of Brighton, Hove & Sussex Grammar School and some of the significant architectural features from across the years, including the entrance gates, original corridors, classrooms & library, before looking at some of the design features of newer educational buildings on the estate.
The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and will take you on a walking tour around the College site with a small group of 12. There are ramps at the entrance and lifts in both the main hall and Elms Building, but, if you have impaired mobility, please email [email protected] to request assistance, once you have booked your tickets.
All tours begin in the Main Hall, where you can also find out more about the school's use as a military hospital in WW1, the links with Aubrey Beardsley and see the spectacular College Hall paintings by Ditchling School artist and former pupil, Louis Ginnett. Please arrive 5 minutes before the tour is due to begin. At our Community History exhibition in the Main Hall, you will also have the chance to speak to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Royal Pavilion and Museums team to explore the importance of 'everyday history' in Brighton and Hove and the work they are doing with the College to uncover the real lives behind the names inscribed on the walls.
There is also a separate, more light-hearted 'Ghost Tour' around College House - please see the alternative booking link on the Heritage Open Day website. If you wish to book onto both tours, please allow at least ONE HOUR between bookings, to give enough time to finish one tour and reach the starting point of the next one.
All activities are free, but any donations to support our Heritage Restoration Fund will be gratefully received.
